If you can't find the insurance you want on this web site, ask us for it.

Believe it or not, motorcycle Insurance inThailand is difficult to find.

Most insurance companies don’t want to insure motorcycles.

Those that will insure motorcycles prefer insuring the big bikes.

Getting insurance that you can read  in English is even more difficult..

There are 3 types of motorcycle coverage you can purchase inThailand:

  1. Compulsory Third Party Coverage
  2. Voluntary Third Party Coverage
  3. Comprehensive Coverage

COMPULSORY INSURANCE

The Thai government requires all motorcycle owners to have Compulsory coverage on their bikes when they register it. The coverage can be purchased from the Land Transportation Office at the time of registration or it can purchased from any insurance company that sells motorcycle insurance. The cost and the coverage are the same no matter where you purchase the insurance. The policy will always be in Thai, but is the police and the Land Transportation that have to read it, not you.

The Coverage:

  • 3rd party bodily injury                          50,000 baht per person.
  • 3rd party death                                    100,000 baht per person
  • Maximum payout                              5,000,000 baht per occurrence

Premium charges are determined  by your bike's engine size.

VOLUNTARY INSURANCE

Having Compulsory Insurance doesn’t get you off the hook if the injured party’s medical costs are quite high or if the deceased’s relatives think that the life of the deceased was worth more than 100,000 baht. In addition, the Compulsory Insurance doesn’t cover any property damage you may have caused. And, what happens if you get taken to jail?

Voluntary Third Party Insurance pays in addition to what the Compulsory Third Party Insurance pays.  Here is what it normally covers::

  1. Third Party Liability
    • Bodily injury                                        100,000 baht per person                    (150,000 baht)
    • Death                                                    100,000  baht per person                    (200,000 baht)
    • Maximum  payable                     10,000,000 baht  per occurrence       (15,000,000 baht)
    • Property damage                             200,000 baht per occurrence.
  1. PA (accident death & dismemberment)  50.000 baht (for driver)
  2. Bail Bond (to get out of jail.                        200,000 baht per occurrence.

Premium charges are determined  by your bike's engine size.

FIRST CLASS COMPREHENSIVE INSURANCE

The main reason bike owners purchase First Class Comprehensive Insurance is to protect their investment in their bike. This insurance provides coverage for collision, overturning, fire, theft and other perils as determined by the value of the car at the time of insurance purchase.

But, depending on the engine size (the larger the better) the other coverage can be expanded considerable.  For example, a large 1200 cc BMW was recently covered for 1 million baht Third Part injury or death, 2.5 million property damage, 100,000 baht PA, 100,000 baht medical cover for self and passenger and 300,000 baht bail bond coverage.

The point here is that there is some flexibility in the coverage you can get if you go
First Class. Of course, the more coverage you get, the more you pay.
